By the time I graduated high school I had already completed three Outward Bound wilderness trips, ranging from an 8 day trip to the Appalachian Trail, 8 days of canoeing and portaging in the boundary waters in Minnesota, and finally 8 days of white water canoeing in the Big Bend region of Texas on the Rio Grande.
After a back injury sidelined me from perusing road racing at a national level, I found that the only bicycle I could ride without pain was my road touring bike, a titanium Salsa Vaya. Shortly after I started down that road, I veered off towards the dirt and haven't looked back.
My first real foray into bikepacking was the Tour Divide. I had tackled a few local trips in preparation but thanks to a condition known as Raynaud's disease, I had to abandon the race after only 500 miles. Even though I was heart broken, I realized that I had found my passion.
Combining my love for the outdoors, the wilderness, and bicycles has been one of the best thing that has happened in my life.
Since then I have tackled 1,100 miles of the Baja Divide, 450 miles of La Ruta Mala in Cuba, and have completed a multi year project to scout and ride the Pony Express Bikepacking Route.
